Adam Sandler reveals the full extent to which his upcoming collaboration with the directors of Uncut Gems has been delayed due to the strikes. 2017’s Good Time announced Benny and Josh Safdie as filmmakers to watch, a designation they further proved with 2019’s Uncut Gems, which earned Sandler the best reviews of his career. The filmmakers are next set to reteam with Sandler for an untitled new Netflix movie set in the world of sports memorabilia, but details on the project remain hard to come by.
Now, in a recent interview with Collider, Sandler confirms that plans to film the movie this past summer fell apart with the onset of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. While many movies delayed by the strike are now resuming or beginning filming, the actor reveals that the intersection of the Safdie brothers’ production with live baseball has caused a lot of uncertainty. “We’re not sure right now. We kind of missed the opportunity of baseball season because of the strike. A lot of it was gonna be shot during live baseball. So it’s gonna take a minute. We’re figuring it all out right now. I’m not sure when it’s gonna happen.”

What To Expect From Adam Sandler’s Next Safdie Brothers Movie
Very few specifics have been released about the untitled Netflix film, but it has been reported that the project won’t feature the combined directing power of both Safdie brothers this time around. While both brothers wrote the script, the new movie will only feature Josh Safdie in the director’s chair, with Benny currently busy with other projects (he was most recently seen as part of the expansive Oppenheimer cast as Edward Teller).
As far as story information goes, the project is said to explore the world of high-end sports card collecting, an arena that, judging from Sandler’s most recent comments, will involve a number of scenes set at baseball games. Beyond that, not much is known, but the Safdies are clearly drawn to street-level stories with a gritty tone, elements that the untitled film may also feature.
Sandler previously teased to Variety that he will sport a very different appearance for the new Safdie brothers’ film, saying “I can’t say I’m going to look that handsome.“
Sandler is expected to play the lead in the film, but the cast is also reported to include Megan Thee Stallion. No information has been revealed about who the Grammy-winning rapper will be playing, but it is expected to be a prominent role. Spring 2024 now seems like the earliest the Safdie brothers’ movie could go to camera, with baseball season expected to start in March.
