Dark Winds season 2 is proving even more popular than the first series, and there aren’t many episodes left until the finale. Dark Winds is based on the Leaphorn & Chee novels by the late Tony Hillerman. The first adaptation was actually the 1991 thriller The Dark Wind, which despite being helmed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line) and produced by Robert Redford, received poor reviews and was barely released.

AMC’s Dark Winds is a far more successful take on the material, with the series revolving around Navajo police officers Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) investigating murder cases in 1970s New Mexico. Dark Winds season 2 adapts the Hillerman novel People of Darkness, with Leaphorn and Chee reuniting to go up against a ruthless killer named Colton Wolf (Nicholas Logan). Both seasons of Dark Winds have been acclaimed (they both have 100% Rotten Tomatoes ratings), and season 2 has seen an almost 150% rise in viewership from the first series (via Variety).

There Are 6 Episodes In Dark Winds Season 2 (With 2 Left)

Just like with the first series, Dark Winds season 2 consists of six episodes in total. The most recent episode “The March” aired on August 20th, meaning there are only two episodes remaining in the second season. There is currently no confirmation on a potential season 3 of Dark Winds, but as word of mouth about the series spreads and – more importantly to AMC – viewership numbers are on the rise, it feels inevitable Leaphorn and Chee will return for at least one more case.

Again, like Dark Winds season 1, the second series has been released in weekly installments, giving viewers a chance to digest each episode. While the six-episode run of both seasons might sound lean compared to other thriller shows, thus far this approach has been the perfect balance of giving the story time to breathe while maintaining narrative momentum.
