The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie gets its first major update since the project was announced by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn as part of the upcoming DC Universe slate. In January, DC Studios CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran laid out their initial plans for the relaunch of DC’s film franchise. Included in the slate were a handful of movies and shows, among them a new Superman title — Gunn’s Superman: Legacy movie — and a solo Supergirl film. However, while progress has been made on Superman: Legacy, there hasn’t been any word on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie until now.

As reported by THR, DC Studios has set Ana Nogueira to write the script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Nogueira was previously hired in 2022 to write a script for a Supergirl movie that would’ve spun off from The Flash, in which Sasha Calle played Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El. However, the project was scrapped due to Gunn and Safran’s revamped DC Universe, though the executives were reportedly so impressed with Nogueira’s work they brought her back for Woman of Tomorrow. Gunn confirmed Nogueira’s involvement in the movie on Instagram:

Gunn welcomed the screenwriter to the DC Universe project and said Nogueira’s script for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is “above and beyond anything I hoped it would be.” He went on to hype the movie itself, saying, “We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale.” No director is attached to the Supergirl movie as of this time, but Gunn indicated in the comments of his post that the search is ongoing.

Everything We Know About The DC Universe’s Supergirl Movie

Little is known about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow because it’s still in the early stages of development, which is why it doesn’t have a director yet. Unlike Gunn’s Superman: Legacy, the Supergirl movie doesn’t have a release date. What is known is that it will be based on the DC comics series of the same name by Tom King that was published from 2021-2022.

When Gunn announced Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in January, he explained how the character in this iteration differs from Superman, saying that Kal-El was raised by loving, human parents, whereas Kara was raised partly on Krypton before its destruction. She’s a “much more jaded character” because she watches everyone around her die. In King’s comics, Kara starts off feeling as though she doesn’t have a purpose because, though she was sent to Earth to protect her cousin, he doesn’t need her help.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed by Gunn, Safran or DC Studios, it seems likely the DC Universe movie will recast Supergirl instead of bringing back Calle. Following The Flash’s box office disaster, DC Studios may want to distance themselves from the movie, and the larger DCEU, as much as possible. Plus, with David Corenswet cast as the new Superman, it makes sense to cast a new actress as Supergirl. Who that will be remains to be seen, and it may be a while before they’re cast. First, Nogueira will need to write the script and DC will need to decide on a director, then the movie can potentially begin casting. For now, though, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has taken an important step forward, which is good to see.
