The future of The Lord of the Rings looks bright, with several upcoming TV shows and movies in production set in Middle-earth. Since 2001 and the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the live-action franchise has expanded with prequels and other spin-offs. This has made watching the Lord of the Rings movies in order a time-consuming task, especially when factoring in the longer form of subsequent TV shows set within the universe.

Despite the expansion of the franchise, a sequel has not yet been made to the original trilogy, meaning those unfamiliar with J.R.R. Tolkien’s original works will not be aware of what happened after Lord of the Rings’ ending. That said, this story could certainly be told in future installments of the franchise, with stories outside the tale of Sauron and the One Ring having plenty of potential. When concerning the promising potential of the franchise, nothing exemplifies this more than the upcoming TV shows and movies set in The Lord of the Rings universe.

3 The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Release Date: December 13, 2024

The only upcoming project with a set release date is The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. This film was confirmed to be in development in 2021 by director Kenji Kamayama. An animated film, The War of the Rohirrim is written by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou from a story by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Interestingly, Phillipa Boyens – the co-writer of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies – served as a story consultant for the film. This, combined with the animation style taking direct inspiration from the live-action movies, confirmed The War of the Rohirrim as a spiritual prequel to Peter Jackson’s original trilogy.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will be set 183 years before The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The latter was the second film in Jackson’s trilogy and was the first to introduce the Rohirrim, also known as the horse lords of Rohan. The story will center on Helm Hammerhand, a legendary king of Rohan voiced by Brian Cox who looks to defend his country against an army of Dunlendings. Other cast members include the returning Miranda Otto as Eowyn from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gaia Wise as Hera, Helm’s daughter, and Lucas Pasqualino as Wulf, the leader of the villainous Dunlendings.

2 The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2

Expected 2024-2025

The next confirmed project in The Lord of the Rings’ future is the continuation of Amazon Prime’s The Rings of Power. The Rings of Power season 2 will continue from where the last season left off, chronicling the War of the Elves and Sauron in the Second Age of Middle-earth. While it is unclear exactly what the story of season 2 will be, The Rings of Power season 2’s cast will continue exploring the iconic Lord of the Rings characters featured in the show and how the continuation of the crafting of the titular Rings of Power will clash with Sauron’s renewed presence in Middle-earth after season 1.

Filming for The Rings of Power season 2 took place between October 2022 and June 2023, with production managing to be finalized before the strikes of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA paused production. As such, a release date of 2024 or 2025 is expected for The Rings of Power season 2. While an exact date has not been confirmed, the end of the 2023 strikes will undoubtedly mean more information on The Rings of Power season 2 will be provided in the early stages of 2024.

1 New LOTR Movie Adapted From The Books By New Line Cinema

Release Date: TBC

Elijah Wood as Frodo in The Lord of the Rings

The final confirmed upcoming entry into the Lord of the Rings franchise is a new series of films set within Middle-earth. In February 2023, it was announced that New Line Cinema – the studio involved in every Lord of the Rings production since 2001 including War of the Rohirrim and Rings of Power – acquired Middle-earth Enterprises. Upon doing so, the company quickly began development on a new series of films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s books. Given that the announcement of the acquisition only came in February 2023, little information has been given on this series of films.

The only detail revealed is that the series will be based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rather than any of Tolkien’s other works. This has led many to wonder if the planned series will be a remake of the original two trilogies by Peter Jackson, though this is nothing more than speculation given Hollywood’s tendency towards reboots and remakes of late. Regardless, the possibility of upcoming feature films in The Lord of the Rings franchise – alongside The War of the Rohirrim and the continuation of The Rings of Power – warrants cautious optimism, depending on the stories told and the creative teams involved.
