The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes director Francis Lawrence shares his conditions for returning for a follow-up film. Taking place decades before the events of the Hunger Games movies, the upcoming prequel is once again based on source material from author Suzanne Collins. The new movie stars Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird, a District 12 tribute who is paired with a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blythe) during the 10th Hunger Games.
Now, ahead of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes release date, Lawrence, a franchise veteran, tells EW what it would take for him to return to direct another installment. While there aren’t currently any concrete plans in place for a follow-up movie, the director stresses that source material from Collins would be a must when it comes to his involvement. Check out Lawrence’s full comment below:
“If Suzanne has another thematic idea that she feels fits into the world of Panem — whether with new people or familiar characters — I’d be interested in being a part of it. But I don’t have any pull of just going, like, ‘I would love to do Finnick’s games.’ What are the thematic underpinnings that make it worth telling? The original ones were all about the consequences of war. [BOSS] is about the state of nature. That’s what makes them feel rich — and why they’ve stood the test of time.”

Will There Be More Hunger Games Movies?
The initial Hunger Games movies starring Jennifer Lawrence were widely successful, with the four films in the franchise collectively bringing in over $2.9 billion at the box office. The books were a phenomenon in and of themselves, with audiences evidently excited to see Collins’ world rendered in live-action. It’s unclear, however, if this same franchise enthusiasm will be present for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, as its now been eight years since the previous movie.
If the upcoming prequel is received well and makes a splash at the box office, it’s very possible that another movie will eventually happen. That being said, there is currently no Hunger Games novel that a follow-up could adapt. Collins’ most recent entry in the franchise is The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which was released in 2020, and there has been no confirmation that another book is on the way.
While it’s possible that another movie in the franchise moves forward without source material from Collins, it does seem somewhat unlikely. The author’s material has been key not only in terms of creating a built-in audience for the movies, but also fleshing out the world of the franchise and the characters who inhabit it. It remains to be seen whether The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will get a follow-up, but it’s now clear that one key creative figure will only be returning if Collins decides to revisit the world first herself.
