Robert Kirkman recently revealed why the new GI Joe/Transformers shared continuity is called the Energon Universe, and the reason is perfect.

And according to new publisher Skybound’s Robert Kirkman, the name of the new shared universe isn’t just a catchy moniker, but rather a crucial story point that affects all titles involved.

The recently released Void Rivals #4 (by Robert Kirkman, Lorenzo de Felici, Matheus Lopes and Rus Wooten) expands on the world by introducing the Decepticon Shockwave, who was left in charge of Cybertron following the war between the Autobots and Decepticons. After being offered a bounty on a Quintesson by a Skuxxoid bounty hunter, Shockwave turns them both away. “What currency would you expect me to have that I haven’t already spent on resources?” Shockwave asks. “I barely have enough Energon to sustain myself!”
The Transformers Are Running Out of Energon on Cybertron
It’s only two pages of story in the issue, but it reveals an awful lot about the overall direction of the Energon Universe. Much like the original G1 cartoon, this new era of Transformers began millennia ago, with Optimus Prime and his Autobots fleeing Cybertron in the hopes of finding more Energon, their valuable power source. Judging from the solicitations of future Energon Universe titles, the Transformers will find what they’re looking for on Earth, starting the old Autobot/Decepticon war anew, albeit this time with some new players added to the mix. Next year’s Cobra Commander #1 will see the titular character planning to “utilize the mysterious alien substance known as Energon” in a way that will “send shockwaves across the globe.” This will eventually lead to the formation of the G.I. Joe and Cobra organizations in this continuity.
The Energon Universe Is All About Wars Over Valuable Resources
Kirkman further reinforces the importance of Energon in the Void Rivals letters column, stating, “Energon is soooo important that we named the universe after it.” The concept of different civilizations warring over valuable resources seems to be the driving theme of the Energon Universe, starting with the launch title Void Rivals. Kirkman and de Felici’s sci-fi epic takes place in the Sacred Ring, the remnants of two planets caught in the grip of a black hole. The Agorrian and Zertonian have been locked in a bitter conflict over dwindling resources, with the main story of Void Rivals beginning when two young warriors from each side discover there may not be as much difference between their peoples than they initially thought.
How the conflict over the Sacred Ring will tie into the Transfomers’ larger quest for Energon remains to be seen, but the thematic parallels between the different titles making up the Energon Universe are hard to ignore. One thing’s for sure: Transformers fans won’t want to miss a single issue of any of the new titles in the shared continuity, as it looks like the Energon Universe will be the most cohesive crossover with G.I. Joe yet seen.
