Warning: Spoilers for Silver Surfer: Rebirth Legacy #3!An underrated hero who redefined himself through the Thunderbolts has just earned Thanos’ respect. That hero is Genis-Vell, son of the original Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell. He is perhaps best known for his time as the third Captain Marvel, during which he was fused with Rick Jones, before becoming his own man as a member of the Thunderbolts.
Now, he’s in an unexpected team-up alongside Thanos in Silver Surfer: Rebirth Legacy #3 by Ron Marz, Ron Lim, Don Ho, Romulo Fajardo Jr, VC’s Joe Sabino, Noah Sharma, Darren Shan, and C.B. Cebulski. The team-up surprises even the Mad Titan himself, who gives props where props are due to the son of Mar-Vell at the battle’s conclusion.
And as far as Genis-Vell is concerned, when a man like Thanos is hard to please, the compliment resonates all the more.
Thanos Respects Genis-Vell
The Black Surfer resurfaces, after first debuting during the Thanos Wins arc as a future version of Silver Surfer that’s been corrupted by Black Matter. Silver Surfer and Thanos reluctantly team-up to face him. When the present-day Surfer vanishes in an attempt to save Genis-Vell’s life, the former Captain Marvel is essentially tagged into action, bumping Thor’s hammer out of Black Surfer’s hand. Genis-Vell struggles to lift Mjölnir for himself, but Thanos assures him that won’t be necessary because this fight is all about “raw power.” With their combined raw power, Thanos and Genis-Vell manage to wipe the Fallen One off the moon.
Genis-Vell Earns His Keep In The Marvel Universe
This is far from the first time the two have met, as Thanos once recruited Genis-Vell specifically, but it does highlight why Thanos’ respect for Genis-Vell continues to grow. Genis-Vell is one of the more underrated, arguably entirely overlooked heroes of the Marvel Universe. It’s easy for some readers to forget his time as Captain Marvel, as Genis-Vell admittedly stands awkwardly in the history books in between more notable names like his father and, of course, Carol Danvers, names that are more widely recognized as having the Captain Marvel brand name attached to them.
However, with this team-up and co-signed by Thanos, Genis-Vell now stands tall in a league of his own. Not only does Thanos praise him, but he compares him to his father, Mar-Vell, the original Captain Marvel. For someone whose time with the Captain Marvel mantle may be largely forgotten by the larger Marvel fan base, being compared to his father in that regard solidifies that he should be ranked higher in Marvel Comics tiers than he actually is. In just one moment, Thanos legitimizes the son of Mar-Vell, simultaneously showcasing how Genis-Vell is shaping up to be the hero he’s destined to be.
